This painting is a part of And you wake up. And you’re a part of the Brand New World, a series that explores the concept of hauntology—a state of being similar to that of a ghost: neither present nor absent; neither dead nor alive. The ghost of the past haunts the present in the form of constant, aching nostalgia and castrates the ability to envision a future without basing it on what already exists. It addresses the multitudinous symbols and imageries from my childhood that haunt my current body of work. By removing the symbols from their usual context, I produced memorials that exist at the intersection between my world and the real world.
